Expand your world on an international exchange

Arts students are encouraged to consider spending one or two terms studying in a foreign country. The courses you take can be credited towards your Waterloo degree. The educational, linguistic, and cultural benefits of participating in an exchange program are significant. You’ll also get the opportunity to be an "ambassador" for Waterloo and your country in diverse parts of the world.

We have more than 70 student exchange agreements in over 20 different countries including:

Australia
Hong Kong
Norway
Austria
India
Russia
Croatia
Israel
Singapore
Cuba
Italy
South Korea
France
Japan
Spain
Germany
Netherlands
United Kingdom

Plan ahead

While you normally go on exchange in your third year, you need to begin preparing for this experience as soon as you arrive at Waterloo.

Speak to your academic advisor about creating your academic plan beginning in first year. Consider taking appropriate language and culture courses if you're interested in an exchange to a non-English-speaking country.

Waterloo Arts offers the second largest range of language studies available at an Ontario university. Check the Undergraduate Calendar, and you’ll find what you’re looking for:

  • French
  • Chinese
  • Italian
  • German
  • Croatian
  • Spanish
  •  Dutch
  • Japanese
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Korean

Fees, cost of living and financial aid

When on exchange, you’ll pay tuition fees to Waterloo, rather than to the exchange university. However, you will have to consider living costs and travel expenses.

Start now!

You should start planning for a possible international exchange as soon as your first year. Think about:

  • the country in whcih you'd most like to live and study
  • the langauge or culture you'd like to be immersed in for one or two terms
  • academic planning for your program (speak to your academic advisor)
  • financial considerations, such as
    • scholarships and bursaries (J.R. Coutts, the Ron Eydt and the David Johnston International Experience Awards) are available.
    • get your information on scholarships and application forms at the Students Awards and Financial Aid Office.

Other International Experiences

Dean of Arts Students’ Fund for short-term academic activities and travel

Our Dean’s Office has reserved a fund of between $4,500.00 and $5,000.00 for Arts students intending to undertake short term academic program-related work away from the University of Waterloo campus.

These activities can include the presentation of a paper at an off-campus national or international conference or participation in a four to six week academic summer program. However, one or two term international exchanges are excluded from this.

If you're interested in this funding you must apply at least two months in advance to the Arts International Exchange Coordinator, rwryan [at] uwaterloo [dot] ca (Robert Ryan), who will interview you and provide you with the necessary application form. Each application will be judged on its own merits. The amount of money available will vary from year to year, according to the number of students accepted for this funding.

Please note the funds granted are only available to you upon your return to campus and upon proof of your participation in the academic activity or short-term course of study.

In past years successful candidates have participated in conferences in the United States and have taken summer courses in Cuba, France, Italy, Hong Kong and mainland China.

What are my options for working overseas?

A part-time job may be possible during your exchange term; however it does depend on the specific regulations of the country you’re going to. Check out the partner university’s website for any job information for international students.

There are many other ways you can work overseas. Here are some helpful links:
