Research
Interests
I
am interested in the origins of people's views of themselves and
how such self-perceptions, in turn, influence people's judgments
and decisions, memories of their pasts, expectations for their futures,
and evaluations of others. In recent years, these interests have
led to research on the following topics:
- How
people's current self-concepts influence their autobiographical
memories, as well as how their recollections of their pasts affect
their present self-concepts.
- Cross
cultural differences in self-perceptions. We examine how/when/why
the self-perceptions and self-evaluations of Chinese immigrants
to Canada differ from those of Canadian-born Chinese and Canadians
of European origins.
- Collaborative
memory and aging.
- Social
and temporal comparison processes.
- Time
perception. We examine factors that influence whether past or
anticipated future events feel close or far away, and psychological
consequences of these differing time perceptions.
- Evaluations
and recollections of conflict in marital, dating, and parent-child
relationships.
